Pori Jazz Rythms and the Sea

Pori is established at the mouth of the Kokemäenjoki river in 1558, and at present it is by population the tenth largest city in Finland. Some 140.000 people live in the Pori region. Traditionally an industrial and port city, Pori has rapidly transformed into a signifi cant student hub. Strong ties to culture have kept the city vigorous for centuries. The city of Pori is located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia at the mouth of the Kokemäenjoki river. This "pearl of western Finland" has a great deal to offer visitors, no matter whether they are interested in culture, in sports activities, or whether they are nature entusiast.

In spring and summer, the town is full of high-class exhibitions, cultural occations, fairs, summer markets as well as sporting events. Places of interest include the market place, the pedestrian street, the old houses of Eteläranta, hiking routes and birdwatching sites in the Kokemäenjoki delta. The top of two at- tractions are undoubtedly the Pori Jazz Festival and Yyteri Beach. There is a beautiful archipelago in the city area of Pori. The coastal bays are shallow, and the coastline is gradually moving out towards the sea due to rising of the land and further decomposition of river silt.

Pori Jazz Festival - Memorable experience every July duration: 1 day

The International Pori Jazz Festival was established in 1966. Since then the festival has progressed into a big event, gathering nearly 150,000 visitors every year. The festival includes about 90 concerts with almost half of them free of cost.

Besides Jazz music, the festival offers various forms of blues and soul. Famous artist from all over the world come to perform in local clubs and big open air concerts, with the Kirjurinluoto arena allowing a capacity of just over 30,000 music lovers.

During the Jazz time, the festivities last until early morning. People often move from one concert to another, enjoying the big events or just relaxing in the Jazz Street, listening to the free concerts.

The Jazz area provides various types of fast food and á la Carte restaurants. Overall the Pori Jazz Festival is an event that offers a memorable experience.

Pori Sightseeing - Getting to know the Heart of the City duration: 5 hours

The city of Pori was founded on the delta area of the Kokemäenjoki River in 1558 and is nowadays the 10th largest city in Finland.

On the guided tour through the city you will visit the museum of modern art, neo-gothic central church and the mausoleum of Juselius, where his daughter who died at the age of 11 was laid to rest.

The day continues by getting to know the market place and shopping promenade in the heart of the city. The meeting point of inhabitants and tourists is the shopping promenade, where you find commercial centres, street cafés, gift shops and many other services. Also in the area you may find many cultural, market and special events arranged for your enjoyment.

When you get hungry, there is a variety of restaurants offering everything from snacks to á la Carte. After eating, the journey moves on to Reposaari. This part of the city offers a view of small wooden houses that are unique to this area. Sights to see in this area also include the old fashion Norwegian style church and wind power plant.

Heritage and History - A Day Trip to Pori and its Surroundings duration: 5 hours

This versatile trip provides a good general idea of the history of Pori and its surroundings. We begin with a short sightseeing trip through Pori, continuing on to the municipality of Noormarkku. The A. Ahlström Corporation industrial area, and internationally valued Villa Mairea designed by the architect Alvar Aalto are both located in this area.

From Noormarkku we move on to another industrial area, Leineperin Ruukki industrial area, located in the village of Ulvila which belongs to Kullaa. Leineperin Ruukki alias Fredriksforsin Ruukki was founded in 1771. This area is one of the most preserved and complete historical industrial areas in Finland.

Only a short distance away we will find the stone church of Ulvila, built in the middle ages. Following the visit to the church, we will visit the leather factory in Friitala which includes a leather museum and outlet store. The store is a good place to find high quality Finnish leather wear. Also you can find the unique candles made by the Drockila Oy candle makers. During a shopping break you can even follow the making of the candles. After the lunch, we will return to Pori where you'll have free time to get to know the city.

Golf

In Pori, the golf player will find the country's longest season as well as two completely different links; Yyteri Golf Links 18-hole golf course by the sea and Kalafornia Golf 27-hole golf course by the riverside.
