Hudiksvall Happy Hudik - Where Happiness Thrives
In the middle of Sweden, situated between distant blue hills and the deep sea, you'll find the municipality of Hudiksvall. The town is known by many as "Glada Hudik", i.e. "Happy Hudik". This term was coined in the 1800s when shipping and the timber trade were at their heights.
Visitors flocked here as it became a port-of-call famous for its friendly hospitality and lively social life. The town was granted its civic rights by King Johan III in 1582.
Most of the old buildings in Hudiksvall are post-1721, the year in which the Russians ravaged the Northeast coast of Sweden. The whole town - with the exception of the church - was burnt down.
The town's fishing heritage is visible today in the typical fishermen's cottages along the Strömmingssundet Sound, the well preserved wooden buildings of Fiskarstan and the district around Lilla Kyrkogatan.
Shore Excursions
Our history is an important part of our life today and thanks to many idealists we can show our visitors parts of our history, for example by visiting old iron works or take the bike on the old railway.
The museums and old farm houses as well as the churches are also worth visiting. In the old farm houses and in the churches there are many signs from both local artists from 1700th and 1800th century.
It is easy to visit Hudiksvall. When you are in the harbour you are also in the middle of the city of Hudiksvall. Guided tours in the city and the surroundings will be arranged.

Tour Hälsingland Farm houses
The Farmhouses of Hälsingland are unique. The magnificence of the farms has its origins in the work which was carries out by the men and women of the farms on their outbuildings and on their land. The "timber palaces" from the 18th and 19th centuries consist of timbered 2 or 3-storey houses with up to eleven windows in a row and carved, multicoloured porches. The richly decorated interiors are well preserved and authentic, and show great skill and artistry in their execution. Their décor is a unique synthesis of folk art and the upper class styles of the age such as Baroque, Rococo and Gustavian styles
City Walk
Visit The Hälsinglands Museum, Fishermen's town (old part of Hudiksvall), Jakobs church and listen to the story of the town theatre. Some of the streets are hilly but there are no stairs, so wheel-chairs are no problem in the streets. Most of the entrances are adjusted to wheel-chairs.
